Program Director, Phlebology Fellowship
As a leading Venous Center, developed an un-accredited fellowship program at Stony Brook in the field of Phlebology. Currently this is the only training Phlebology program in the United States. Secured $110K per year in funding from the American College of Phlebology for supporting the fellowship. Fellow plays an important role in the VTE team to achieve quality standards.

Was responsible in designing, overseeing building, ordering all equipment and overseeing completion of the outpatient Vascular Center. Completed the project in 6 months and kept under budget. Obtained AAASF certification for the operating room with first attempt and no citations. Currently have outperformed first year projected volume.
2008-presentDirector, Venous Thromboembolism Team
Developed a VTE team in 2008 to implement and EMR VTE advisor based on ACCP guidelines. This has expanded to multiple achievements including reduction in use in Argatroban, improvement in VTE risk factor evaluation, improvement in VTE prophylaxis, reduction in LOS and reduction in VTE events. Resulting in significant cost savings for the institution. Some of the highlights are listed below:
  • 2015 – VTE team received iCARE award
  • 2015 – Improvement in overall VTE core measure from 35% to 92%
  • 2013 – Implemented IVC filter retrieval program which has reduced usage of IVC filters by 50% and has improved retrieval from 20% to 80%. This results in significant savings and improved patient quality. Annual savings: $100K
  • 2012 – VTE team evaluated intermittent compression devises in the market and played a key role in selecting the best devise in the market at the lowest cost. Annual savings: $75K
  • 2011 – Implemented floor service with NP’s to help expedite patients with VTE for discharge. Worked with nursing and social services to anticipate patients needs on discharge. Annual savings: Decrease LOS of patient with DVT by 1.3 days.
  • 2010 – Stony Brook was in Top ten percent of all applications submitted to the Hospital Association of New York State (HANYS) for the Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety in Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) effort to improve assessment rates and outcome.
  • 2009 – Implemented protocol for Argatroban use which resulted in significant cost savings. This program is still in effect and has continued the above annual savings. Annual savings: $500K
2010-presentSupervisor, Bedside PICC team
In 2010 we transitioned from fluoroscopy guided PICC placement in Special procedures to bedside placement. This has not only dramatically improved time to placement but also reduced hospital LOS and decreased overall costs.
  • 2015-2016 – Incorporated new technology to eliminate need for portable CXR to confirm PICC placement. Anticipated net annual cost savings: $100K
  • 2013-2015 – developed standardized protocol for PICC placement. Institution benefit: 0% incidence of catheter related infections due to PICC lines in the last 2 years.
  • 2011 – Transitioned over 90% of PICC lines now performed at bedside. Insitutional benefits: decrease in LOS in PICC patients by 2.5 days.
